Venezuelan Maria Corina Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her efforts to promote democratic rights in her country and her struggle for a democratic transition.
Venezuelan courts have barred Machado, a 58-year-old industrial engineer who lives in hiding, from running for president in 2024 and challenging President Nicolás Maduro, who has been in power since 2013.
"When autocrats seize power, the courageous defenders of freedom who rise up and resist must be honored," the committee said in a statement.
