Protests in France against a project to build a nuclear waste disposal center
Hundreds of French people took part in a demonstration against a planned nuclear waste storage center in rural France, with police having to fire tear gas to disperse them.
The project, known as CIGEO, aims to build an underground storage center outside the northeastern village of Bourg to bury the most dangerous waste from nuclear power plants.

Organizers said around 2,000 people took to the streets of the village to protest the plan by the National Agency for the Management of Radioactive Waste (Andra), while authorities estimated the number of demonstrators at around 700.

Amid a heavy security presence, the demonstrators marched behind a banner reading "Protest for the Future," demanding that Andra leave the area.
