German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Wednesday that European countries should increase their support for Ukraine, following statements by US President Donald Trump that Ukraine could recover all of its territories occupied by Russia.
"We can do more if all European countries have not fulfilled what they promised Ukraine a long time ago," Wadephul told Deutschlandfunk radio. "We must consider other financial and military options available to us."
Trump expressed his belief on Tuesday that Kyiv is capable of recovering all of its occupied territories and that Kyiv must act now as Russia faces "significant" economic problems. These comments were hailed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a "major shift." However, it remains unclear whether Trump's words will be matched by a major shift in US policy, such as a decision to impose tough new sanctions on Moscow. Trump has previously suggested that Ukraine cede territory in order to achieve peace.
