Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced on Saturday that the Ministry of Electricity is proceeding with an ambitious plan to increase electricity production to over 57,000 megawatts through a project involving Siemens and GE.
His media office stated in a press release received by the Iraq Times Agency that "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani inaugurated today the 11th Iraq Energy/IEE Exhibition and Conference, held at the Baghdad International Fairgrounds, with the participation of more than 450 specialized companies from over 16 countries."
Al-Sudani commended "the efforts behind holding the conference and exhibition, which we aspire to make a platform for decision-makers, government institutions, and private sector companies to collaborate on implementing projects using the latest technologies and techniques, ensuring economic viability, and providing solutions that drive development, expand the utilization of oil and gas resources, modernize electricity production and distribution networks, utilize renewable energy, and protect the environment."
He emphasized "the government's commitment to the energy sector, both conventional and renewable, in a way that ensures sustainable development," noting that "the exhibition clearly demonstrates Iraq's potential as a promising market and the numerous opportunities it possesses in the energy field, whether through projects, partnerships, or investment opportunities."
Al-Sudani added that "the government has made significant progress in the energy sector, particularly in increasing production." Energy is being developed through major projects in the oil sector, in partnership with international companies including Total and BP. We also have ongoing discussions with ExxonMobil, Chevron, and other global companies.
He continued, "We have made significant progress in utilizing associated gas, exceeding 72% in eliminating gas flaring, and this will reach 100% by the end of 2028. We have infrastructure projects underway for the Ministry of Oil that will ensure export capacity and diversify export routes."
He also noted, "The Ministry of Electricity is proceeding with an ambitious plan to increase electricity production, exceeding 57,000 megawatts, through a project with Siemens and GE."
