Warning of "environmental annihilation": 50,000 privately owned generators have turned Iraqi cities into pollution hotspots
The Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights warned on Monday of what it described as "environmental annihilation" caused by pollutants emitted from privately owned generators in Baghdad and other provinces. The Observatory called for a shift to clean energy and the immediate implementation of the Environmental Protection Law.

The Earth Protection Program (EPP) at the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights stated in a press release, reported by Iraq Times, that "more than 50,000 diesel generators have transformed Iraqi cities into hotbeds of suffocating pollution and carcinogenic toxins." The statement further noted that "Baghdad topped the list of the world's most polluted cities at the beginning of 2026 (AQI=301 – acute toxicity)."
