Amazon has filed an application with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch and operate a new system called Amazon Leo, a direct-to-machine (D2M) satellite constellation comprising up to 5,105 satellites in low Earth orbit. The system aims to provide voice, data, text messaging, and emergency services directly to compatible smartphones and mobile devices, with deployment slated to begin in 2028.
The new system targets areas lacking cell tower coverage by connecting smartphones and mobile devices directly to the satellites.
This project follows Amazon's definitive agreement in April to acquire Globalstar's satellite operations and assets, including spectrum licenses for its global mobile satellite services. The new system will operate alongside Amazon's first and second-generation Leo satellite internet network, as well as Globalstar's HyBlu and C3 networks, enabling the expansion of D2M services to mobile phones.
Amazon plans to launch more than 5,000 satellites for direct phone connectivity.
