Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi welcomed on Saturday the agreement reached between the Central Bank of Iraq and the US Treasury Department regarding the qualification of seven Iraqi banks to return to international correspondent banking channels, paving the way for them to regain their eligibility to deal in US dollars.
Al-Zaidi said in a post on Twitter: "We welcome the agreement reached between the Central Bank of Iraq and the US Treasury Department, which represents an important step in the process of reforming the banking sector and strengthening its integration into the global financial system."
He noted that "the qualification of seven Iraqi banks to return to international correspondent banking channels in other currencies, paving the way for them to regain their eligibility to deal in US dollars, after completing the compliance and governance requirements, confirms the success of the financial reform approach adopted by the government, strengthens confidence in the Iraqi banking sector, and opens broader horizons for the national economy and investment."
He added: "We will continue to support financial and banking reforms and consolidate the principles of transparency and governance, in a way that serves Iraq's interests and strengthens its economic position regionally and internationally."
