The National Security Council held an emergency meeting today, Wednesday, chaired by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, to discuss the evolving security situation and the attack launched by US and Saudi air forces this morning, which resulted in a number of martyrs and wounded.
In a statement, the official spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Nu’man, said that the Council expressed its condemnation of the attack, which came at a time when the Iraqi government was in contact with relevant parties to investigate and address the concerns raised by the Saudi and American sides regarding the targeting of Saudi territory.
He added that the National Security Council decided to develop a comprehensive security plan to secure the territory and confront any violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, and to prevent any party from threatening neighboring countries. The Council also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to act in accordance with international law and the UN Charter to document the situation and uphold Iraq’s legitimate rights.
The meeting reaffirmed the government’s firm stance against all acts of aggression, regardless of the perpetrator or the justifications offered, stressing that addressing and confronting these attacks is the exclusive responsibility of the Iraqi government and its constitutional institutions.
The Council renewed the government’s commitment to consolidating stability in the region and contributing to the maintenance of international security and stability, adopting a foreign policy based on dialogue, cooperation, respect for international law and the principles of good neighborliness, and adopting diplomatic means to resolve disputes, in line with the approach of distancing Iraq from regional conflicts and preserving its national interests and safeguarding the security of its people and its sovereignty.
