At a sensitive time, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Wednesday for a three-day visit. He stated that his country would take practical steps to strengthen relations with Iraq.
He also described Iraq as an important country in the region. Speaking to reporters after laying a wreath at the monument to Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassem Soleimani on the road to Baghdad International Airport, Ghalibaf said, "Our visit comes in the context of the regional situation and the need to expedite bilateral cooperation without foreign interference. We will meet with senior government officials."
Prior to his arrival, the chief Iranian negotiator posted on his Twitter account, explaining that Iraq and Iran "will take significant practical steps during this visit to consolidate the security of both countries."
He also emphasized that "the relationship between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples is a historical and unbreakable bond." He added, "Our neighborliness was based on brotherhood in the harshest of days, resistance to foreign interference, and belief in the common destiny of both countries. This past full of lessons will be the beacon for the future," as he put it.
Qalibaf arrives in Baghdad and speaks about the self-security and shared security of the two countries.
